Mainstreaming Biodiversity: opportunities for businesses

December 2nd and 3rd, 2016
Moon Palace Hotel, Cancún, México
According to the 2016 Global Risks Report of the World Economic Forum, biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse are among the 10 major risks faced by the private sector, in terms of their potential impact.
In light of such a possible systemic collapse, it is in the best interest of businesses, not only governments, to take into account the value of biodiversity and ecosystem services in productive systems.
Mainstreaming biodiversity into the planning and operation of productive sectors implies integrating conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in business plans, beyond corporate social responsibility strategies.
This innovative approach will be addressed at the 2016 Business and Biodiversity Forum (B&BF 2016), which will take place in parallel to the Ministerial High Level Segment of the 13th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP13-CBD) of the United Nations.

Main Objectives of the 2016 B&BF

  • To present novel perspectives to address biodiversity conservation from the private sector perspective, including the economic analysis required for business decision making, investment opportunities and financing conditions, as well as mainstreaming biodiversity in specific sectors, and other relevant topics.
  • To enable the exchange of experiences, challenges and innovative ideas on mainstreaming biodiversity into productive processes.
  • To also enable the exchange of ideas with Ministers of the CBD Parties attending the Conference, international experts and other relevant figures.
  • To facilitate reflection on how biodiversity is essential to maintain economic prosperity and social well-being; favoring a pledge to convey the importance of its conservation and sustainable use. Never before has such a pledge been presented within the context of a Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity of the United Nations.
