Biosphere Reserve Celestún

This reserve is located at the mouth of the largest groundwater basin in Yucatan; It is one of the reserves more varieties of species and ecosystems: mangroves, dunes, hillocks, low forest and grasslands.

One of the main attractions of the reserve is bird watching as Ria Celestún is one of the main places for rest, feeding and reproduction of a wide variety of migratory species, especially the pink flamingo. The natural protected area is home to 300 species of birds, like woodpeckers, and hummingbirds.

The fusion of various terrestrial and aquatic environments offers beautiful scenery with varieties of aquatic species and springs, where the lush vegetation creates perfect scenarios for recreation activities.

Established as a reserve in February 2000, the protected area covers an area of 59,139 hectares. To visit the estuary is advisable to do so by boat and explore the far north, where there is a sizeable population of pink flamingos. In the estuary live species such as the crocodile and some 95 species of resident birds and 75 migratory birds.

Dzibilchaltun

Mayapán
